The aim of the research project was to develop a new version of the "Assessment System Sustainable Building" (Bewertungssystem Nachhaltiges Bauen, BNB) for the building category "inter-company vocational training centres". The research results are available in the form of 43 drafts of BNB criteria and corresponding forms.

Assessment System for Sustainable Building - additional teaching materials

The aim of the research project has been to provide further teaching materials for seminars for staff members of public building authorities to gain the qualification for assessing the performance of sustainability of buildings in accordance with the German Assessment System for Sustainable Building (BNB). The new teaching materials are to be used for seminars or self-study accompanying the wider usage of the BNB for assessing public buildings.

Assessment System Sustainable Building - Testing of the system design for "Sustainable Educational Buildings"

Subject of the project was the organisation and realisation of the test phase of the assessment system "New Construction of Educational Buildings", the support of the sustainability evaluations as well as the conformity check of the submitted documentation. The key findings of the test phase were used to finalise the certification system operationally.

Assessment System for Sustainable Building - testing of the moduls "Existing Buildings/Refurbishment" and "Use and Operate" for existing office buildings

Central element of the research project was testing of the assessment method for existing buildings of the Assessment System for Sustainable Building. Assessment criteria of "Additive Module Use and Operate" as well as "Base Module for Existing Buildings/Refurbishment" were tested using six predetermined sample buildings as a system altogether. Based on the findings assessment modules were revised and completed.

Staging of a system testing for sustainable residential building

An assessment system for new multi-storey residential building was developed in the Sustainable Residential Building working group of the Roundtable for Sustainable Building of the BMVBS. Under the auspices of this research project, the assessment system for sustainable residential building underwent first-time application and system testing on six buildings.

Preparation, realization and documentation of the Symposium on Sustainable Building: Experience exchange and practical implementation of the "Assessment System for Sustainable Building"

The Symposium "Building sustainably - designing the future" presented the first experiences from the application of the "Guideline for Sustainable Building" by the federal building authorities as well as from the implementation of the "Assessment System for Sustainable Building", while honouring the results of sustainable building in the housing sector. Assessment system sustainable building (BNB) - testing of the rating system for outdoor facilities on Federal property

At the core of the research project was the testing of the assessment system for outdoor facilities on Federal property. Along seven selected Federal projects, the 27 criteria profiles were to be reviewed and to be tested as a system on the whole. Development of a tool for the purpose of evaluating the BNB criterion "Risks for the local environment"

In the shape of the sustainable building evaluation system (BNB) a holistic and quantitative evaluation process has existed for newly constructed office and administrative buildings. For the purpose of evaluating the BNB criterion "Risks for the local environment", a tool has been developed for the evaluation and documentation of building materials and building products with respect to their potential risk to ground water, surface water, soil and outside air, which provides a uniform and easier basis for the application of the criterion.

Organisation and performance of Germany's participation in the World Sustainable Building WSB 2011 conference in Helsinki

The German federal government is assuming an exemplary role in the area of sustainable building. The implementation of this intention is presented at regular intervals to the professional public at national and international conferences on the sustainable building. Its participation at the World Sustainable Building Conference 2011 in Helsinki represented the logical continuation of what has become for Germany a permanent presence on the international stage with respect to sustainable building.

Scientific support of the round table for sustainable building and coordination of the necessary submissions in the period of 2010 - 2011

The subject of the research project was the scientific support of the sessions of the round table on sustainable building from the 4th quarter of 2010 to the 4th quarter of 2011. This covered supporting the preparation of the content, cooperation during the sessions and the scientific analysis of the results in the form of recommendations of action for the policies of the association. Additionally, the consultation of the BMVBS and the BBSR for selected questions, the development of policies as well as cooperation during consultation, working groups and expert meetings were achieved.

Scientific monitoring of the "Sustainable Housing Construction" task group

The object of the research project was the scientific monitoring of the "Sustainable Housing Construction" task group, initiated by the round table on sustainable construction at BMVBS. This group was convened to support and enhance the process of opinion-forming within the housing industry on matters of description and assessment of the sustainability of residential buildings. Development of valuation standards for the assessment system sustainable housing

The Assessment System for Sustainable Building (BNB) allows determining the sustainable quality of office and administration buildings. Goal of the research project was the adaption of the BNB to residential buildings. For the evaluation of economical values (Life Cycle Costs, LCC) and environmental inputs and outputs (Life Cycle Assessment, LCA) caused by the construction, the use-phase and the end-of-life of multi-family buildings benchmarks were developed.

Guidelines for sustainable building – outdoor facilities

Scientific advice to the round table on sustainable building and co-ordination of the necessary contributions in the period 2009 - 2010

The subject matter of the research project is the provision of scientific advice to the meetings of the Round Table on Sustainable Building. This includes the preparation of the contents, the participation in the meetings, and the scientific evaluation of the results in form of suggestions for actions and measures of the Federal Government. Sustainability is an important element of the German politics since several years. Completion of the National Certification System for Sustainable Building - criteria characteristics for assessing influences on the local environment by determination of particulate matter emissions from heating systems

Aim of this research project is to develop criteria characteristics for evaluation of office buildings with regard to the influence of particulate matter emissions from heating systems on the local environment. The criteria characteristics add to the National Certification System for Sustainable Building. In order to certify an office building, the evaluations are being rated accordingly and summarized. The table to be used for assessment of particulate matter emissions derives from this report.

Ecological evaluation of building services

Up to now, the ecological evaluation of buildings is often based exclusively on the energy consumption of the building. The methodology of the life cycle assessment also includes the construction of the building, the manufacturing of the materials and the recycling at the end of the use stage. In the research project "Updating and harmonizing of basic data for sustainable construction" and a follow-up project, life cycle assessment (LCA) indicators for building evaluation have been set up for common building materials and have been made available in the Ökobau.dat database. The goal of this project is the provision of ecological profiles for technical building equipment (TBE) components that were not considered yet, and the practical application of the LCA indicators for the evaluation of several publicly owned buildings.

External costs in construction

Evaluation and updating of the German Certificate for Sustainable Buildings

The initial certification version for Office- and Administration Buildings (New Constructions) was developed by the Federal Government in cooperation with the German Sustainable Council (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen e.V.). The first application took place at the End of 2008 on 16 existing buildings. For the further operationalisation of the valuation rules and documentation procedures it is necessary to evaluate the primary results and to derive recommendations for the system`s update and stability.
